Two transfers Man United want complete before the World Cup

Manchester United hope to have completed the signing of Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur and Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk before the start of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, according to the Times.

The Red Devils have already entered negotiations with Spurs over a deal for Alderweireld with the North London club loosening their stance of only selling the defender to clubs abroad.

A deal for midfielder Fred is likely to be far more straightforward to complete with the Ukrainian club assigned to the prospect of selling the Brazilian this summer.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, a renowned tough negotiator, is set to demand a fee in excess of £50m for the defender with the possibility of a deal being completed for a similar size as Virgil van Dijk world record £75m move from Southampton to Liverpool.

The Belgian defender has been made available for transfer following his refusal to sign a new deal in North London with his current contract set to expire in next summer.

Spurs are hopeful of receiving a large fee for Alderweireld this summer with the risk of losing him for £25m next summer due to a clause in his contract.

Originally, Tottenham were only willing to let the central-defender move abroad, however, that stance has now changed and the club are in talks with United over a deal.

Fred has become a highly sought-after player in Europe this season following his stellar campaign with Shakhtar.

The Brazilian has attracted the interest of both Manchester clubs, with United looking the ones most likely to conclude a deal before the World Cup.

Formally for United, the midfielder is in London currently, training with the national team at Tottenham’s training complex ahead of their encounter against Croatia.

Old Trafford officials are now working to agree a fee with the Ukrainian club with the possibility of conducting a medical next week.
